From refugee to educator: How play heals two generations in Uganda
Hakim Patrick’s journey to becoming an educator began on a narrow dirt road near the border of South Sudan and Uganda. It was September 2016, and Hakim, along with his young family, spent days navigating jungles and slipping through back roads, avoiding checkpoints that intercepted young men, demanding that they join the war in South Sudan.

A little push in the right direction can take you a long way
34-year-old Achai Aleu Monica found herself tasked with providing for a household of nine when her husband passed away. Around this time, she also had to flee her home in South Sudan and move to the Rhino refugee settlement in Uganda. The move to Kiriaduoko village in the Rhino camp gave Monica and her family temporary respite but she was soon face-to-face with a new set of challenges – scarcity of food, and limited access to healthcare.

The empowerment and livelihood for adolescents programme that is transforming young girls’ lives
When Esther joined BRAC’s empowerment and livelihood for adolescents (ELA) club in Uganda, she had been forced to drop out of school because her family could not afford her school fees. Adolescent girls in low-income settings, like Esther, face significant challenges, where limited access to education, lack of job opportunities, and economic instability often trap them in a cycle of poverty and dependence.
