Smallholder farmers produce nearly 80% of the food consumed across Asia and Africa. They are also among the most at risk to climate shocks, poverty and hunger.
We focus on smallholder farmers, particularly women and youth, to improve food security, enhance resilience, build sustainable livelihoods, and drive agriculture‑led economic growth. To achieve this, we work across three levels of interventions – farmers, markets, and systems and policies.

Forests help sustain Liberia but climate change threatens the balance. How are communities fighting back?
More than half of Liberia’s people live within 2.5 kilometres of a forest. For the communities around them, these forests are lifelines -feeding families and accounting for up to 35% of their income. This dependence is adding pressure to an ecosystem already shrinking under the escalating impacts of climate change – leaving families struggling to secure and grow enough food.

A farm of one’s own: The potential of locally-led agricultural cooperatives in Liberia
Patience Kortima grew up in a small village in Liberia. Since she was a child, most of the people she knew around her were farmers. That included her mother too. She saw them work hard, from sunrise to sunset, tilling the land and sometimes making tools with their own hands. In fact, Patience’s first job was as a farmer, under the guidance of her mother. Together, as the day broke, they would cultivate their small plot of land.
