In Tanzania, during the pandemic, the closure of school and clubs led our Youth Empowerment programme to introduce mobile technology through which adolescents were provided with psychosocial support and sexual reproductive health (SRH) training. Girls like Leonia were trained on designing websites, database programming, and cyber security.
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic was a challenging period for Leonia and other students in her class. During this period, they were studying from home; the support they got from BRAC Tanzania through remote lessons, phone calls, and cooperative teachers motivated Leonia and her friends and gave them confidence. They received notes, lesson plans, and tablets that helped them learn on the internet.
Leonia Paul, a Form-Four student at Temeke Secondary school in Tanzania, is a participant of the Skills for Their Future project at BRAC Tanzania. Since joining the project, she has learnt programming and coding skills that she can use in daily life. Leonia is now capable of designing a website, database programming, coding, managing social media, and understanding cyber security.
“I am very thankful for the opportunity to learn as I am now confident that I am competent in the fourth industrial market,” Leonia shares. “The Skills for Their Future project has helped me sharpen my focus on who I want to be in life. I aspire to be a graphic designer, as it is something that attracted my interest while I was learning in class,” she adds.
Leonia is now looking forward to sharing her knowledge with the community, especially with girls who lack access to learning opportunities.
